Crete chose for his birth the patriarch of Hellenic gods Zeus and this myth reflects the role of the island for the Mediterranean. It is the cradle of the most ancient European culture, originating in 2600 BC. Paradoxically, the preservation of numerous outstanding cultural monuments caused their burial under a layer of soil as a result of a catastrophic tsunami from the explosion of a volcano on the Island of Santorini in 1400 BC. The relay of the Minoan civilization was picked up by other Greek tribes on the vast Hellenic lands. Tourists today watch the work of archaeologists and admire the palaces of Crete, the most famous of which is adorned with stunning frescoes, the Palace of Knossos. There are arguments in favor of the fact that the Labyrinth of the Minotaur was in the cellars of this palace, there are other places where the fearless hero of Theseus could walk along the thread of Ariadne. The construction of the Labyrinth is attributed to the outstanding ancient engineer Daedalus. The creative impetus to him, perhaps, was the visit of an extremely narrow (2.5m) meandering Samaria gorge. Millennia later the Venetians built the port and quarters of the city of Chania in a quest for classical harmony, and the Venetian lighthouse at the entrance to the harbor and today helps to find the right path for lovers of sea voyages.

In Crete, there are all conditions for recreation of any style and level: from fashionable first-class hotels, snow-white bungalows in the national Cretan style with their own gardens to secluded, pristine places where you can hide from the worldly bustle. The natural and man-made beauty of Crete is so numerous that one vacation will not suffice to enjoy them, even if you rent a car and carelessly travel along this largest island of Greece.
