Amaras monastery is located in the region of Martuni in the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. The Monastery was erected by St. Gregory the Illuminator at the beginning of the fifth century (according to the Armenian historian Pavstos Buzand). The construction of the Monastery is also related to the name of the first bishop of the Province of Artsakh, the grandson of St. Gregory the Illuminator, Gregory who is buried in the eastern part of the Monastery. There is a crypt built on his grave.

In the fifth century the inventor of the Armenian Alphabet, Mesrop Mashtots established in Amaras Monastery the first school of Artsakh. At the same time 36 various buildings were built by the Monastery.
Numerous Armenian chroniders left citations about the Amaras Monastery-Movses Kaghankatvatsi, Stepan Orbelyan and others.
The Monastery was used for varios purposes in differnt periods- as a fortress, a customs house, then in the 19th century it was restored and from 1992 has been used as a church again.
The Amaras Monastery is supposed to be one of Artsakh's architectural monuments of ancient times.
